Coffee pods are becoming more and more popular amongst businesses and households alike. However, it is not widely known that the packaging from the pods are recyclable, let alone how they are recyclable.
The packaging from coffee pods, which are single-use, are collected by household and businesses throughout the UK through various public drop-off points, then sent on for recycling to TerraCycle.
TerraCycle and Tassimo have partnered up to offer the Tassimo Recycling Programme. The Tassimo TDiscs and the outer flow wrap packaging are available for free recycling at one of the locations here.
Where to Recycle the Tassimo Coffee Pods
There are over 200 drop off locations throughout the UK, in North Yorkshire, for example, these are located in:
- West Tanfield

Where to Recycle Nespresso Coffee Pods
When ordering your coffee capsules from the Nespresso website, Nespresso stores, Starbucks, or other participating stores, request a recycling bag. Fill your recycling bag with the used capsules (about 200 capsules can fit into one bag). You can either request a collection for when your next delivery is due to arrive, drop your full bag off with Collect +, Doddle or Nespresso Boutique, or take it to your nearest Starbucks for recycling.
The capsules are shredded, then separated. Metals are melted down and turned into new aluminium products. Residual coffee is separated and sent to an industrial composting facility.
Other Coffee Pod Recycling
Other coffee companies have different ways in which you can recycle your coffee pods.
If you are interested in recycling your coffee pods, I would recommend doing a quick search specifically for the make of coffee machine you have to see what is in place for the recycling of the coffee pods.
The Recycling of the Coffee Pods
The coffee pods and foil wraps, once collected, are cleaned and melted to hard plastic that can be remolded to make new recycled products. These products can include plastic baby bibs, notebook covers and picnic benches.
